Finding your Family's Roots!

In the Budarz Theater on April 16, 2022, Village Historian Joyce Sharrock Cole revealed the ancestral stories of the Everett and the Bailey families, local residents who enlisted the help of the Ossining Public Library's ancestry club to discover their family history. The story of ordinary people is the framework of American history; Joyce encourages you to be your family's historian and learn how you can do this for your family!

My Surname is Not My Bloodline ~ Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 2:00pm

Watch our video of Village Historian Joyce Sharrock Cole as she discusses her journey of researching her family lineage despite her surname not being her family name and how that impacted her genealogical research. She provides a small history of how the claiming of surnames happened for black people and how other ethnic groups that immigrated changed their names to assimilate and escape prejudice. She gives tips on how to navigate this as you do your own family research.

Driven by her passion for genealogy and local research, Joyce is an advocate for all people to learn about their family and local history, as it fosters a better understanding of themselves and the community that has shaped them.
